After many years of being against the law to ride on the K Street Mall, the Sacramento City Council voted unanimously to rescind the prohibition. Near the beginning of the new year, the signs will change to indicate that bicycle traffic is allowable in the center part of K Street Mall (between the yellow tiles) from 13th and 7th Streets. The “tunnel” section between 4th and 2nd Streets will also be open. Bicyclists will always be required to yield to pedestrians, and not ride on the sidewalks, which, in the case of K Street Mall, is the area between the the building walls and the row of trees.

A Frugal Cyclist’s Guide to the Universe: An Evening with Willie Weir

Call him cheap, frugal, a tightwad or an initiator of kindness, Willie Weir knows how to get the most bang for his bucks when it comes to traveling the world–whether it’s giving the world’s cheapest engagement ring, protesting an insanely over-priced fish dinner, knocking on doors for free lodging or eating his way to free ice cream.

Willie will bring to life tales from his latest book “Travels with Willie” that will have you chuckling and leave you wanting to chuck your day job and hit the road. Bicycling magazine says, “Travels with Willie is one of the rare bike books that gets it right.”

Weir Weir is a columnist for Adventure Cyclist magazine and a cycling commentator for public radio station KUOW in Seattle. His bicycle travels have taken him around the globe–including such “off the tourist path” destinations as India, South Africa, Laos and Colombia. He is a native of Sacramento. He graduated from Del Campo High School and earned a BA in theater from CSUS, before moving to Seattle to work as a professional actor.

Proceeds from the evening will go to the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates.

Sorry Bikeramento fans for being quiet lately – since we’re all volunteers for this project, sometimes life gets in the way. However, that doesn’t mean that we should all forget about making Sacramento a much more bike friendly place. The above headline caught my eye as I was scanning news sources. Of course, Davis was ranked No. 1 on the list (as it should be since bikes outrank cars) and some other interesting places like Minneapolis, MN (they bike in the snow!). Its great to read what these other cities and their inhabitants are doing on a daily basis and all of those miles of bike lanes and roads. Sacramento’s weather has cooled down since our last ride so hopefully more people will be out in and about.

Shout out to San Francisco – this Sunday is their Sunday Streets. Check out sundaystreetssf.com for route details. Meanwhile, keep riding out there!

I haven’t owned my own bike for at least 20 years. My good ol’Huffy with cards in the spokes gave me many days of youthful enjoyment, but it probably won’t do me any good. So I figured now would be a wonderful time to shop and find a bike that will fit my need. This will be a new venture for me since I don’t know anything about sizing, brakes, gears, seats, etc. All I know is that I gotsta ride!

Priorities = City riding, Budget, Small Size (13 – 14)

No as important, but sure would be nice = fenders, light design

Finding the right bike for myself hasn’t been too arduous of a task since I began the process about a month ago. So far I’ve visited REI, shopped online, and briefly checked out Bicycle Chef. I’ve also checked out City Bicycle Works for some information on tips for bike sizing.

If anyone has any advice/tips or suggested local retail (preferred) or online stores please post so we can get people looking at the favorites places as they shop.

Thanks in advance!
